Message from the CEO

Dear GGMC Community,

With a heavy heart, I must share a critical update. The Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative, built on your dedication to advancing multi-omic research and patient care, faces a serious financial challenge. Despite significant cost reductions and relentless efforts to secure new funding – as highlighted in my recent article on the challenges facing international genomic initiatives – we have reached a precarious point with only ten weeks of operating funds remaining. We are at a crossroads.

As we urgently explore sustainable revenue streams, and to more deeply understand the value of GGMC to our members, we encourage all G2MC and IHCC members to complete the brief survey recently shared. Additionally, if you or someone in your network has insights or ideas on funding solutions, let’s connect.

Towards that end, this newsletter highlights the recent launch of our “Cohorts to Clinics (C2C)” program, designed to bridge the gap between genomic research and clinical application by coordinating the strengths of IHCC and G2MC. As we continue to seek support for the continuation of GGMC, we still encourage your active engagement in this strategic new program. To support the C2C initiative, we have opened the GGMC Membership Portal for all current and future members. We will gather details about the knowledge and expertise of our membership so we can form and support C2C project teams and communities.

Under our reduced budget, we are supporting continued activities around the IHCC Cohort Atlas, the G2MC Epilepsy Clinical Forum, and our monthly GGMC Educational Webinar Series. Lastly, in this newsletter, we are pleased to share the GGMC 2024 Annual Report, highlighting the significant achievements made possible by our collective efforts.

We encourage all to create a GGMC online account and contribute to the programs highlighted there. Thank you for your continued commitment and your enduring belief in the power of global collaboration to advance genomic medicine. Together, we must navigate these challenges with urgency and determination to ensure that GGMC can continue to shape the future of genomic medicine.

Sincerely,
Grant Wood, GGMC President & CEO

Cohorts to Clinics (C2C)

GGMC is launching the “Cohorts to Clinics (C2C)” program, a transformative initiative designed to bridge the gap between genomic research and clinical application. By uniting the strengths of IHCC and G2MC, C2C aims to streamline data flow from large-scale genomic studies into clinical practice, enhance precision medicine, and ultimately improve patient care worldwide. The program will achieve this through collaborative research projects, robust data integration and sharing, interdisciplinary training, and active patient engagement. Members are encouraged to participate by submitting project ideas, leveraging member skills, and staying informed through upcoming updates.

NOW OPEN!

GGMC Membership Portal

The GGMC membership portal is now open for current and future members to access. This centralized hub is designed for all members across GGMC, G2MC, and IHCC, offering a platform to connect, engage, and access valuable resources. For now, all features are available at no cost, as we prioritize building a vibrant community and understanding how we can better serve you. The portal will be instrumental in launching our exciting new Cohorts to Clinics (C2C) initiative, merging the research power of IHCC with the clinical implementation expertise of G2MC to further GGMC’s mission. We invite all members to create an account, provide your information, and explore the available resources. Please remember that this is just version one, and we’re committed to continuous updates and improvements with more features to be added in the future, dependent on securing new funding.

GGMC 2024 Annual Report

annual-report-2024

We’re pleased to share the GGMC 2024 Annual Report, highlighting a year of significant achievements in advancing global genomic medicine. Despite the delay in its release, we are excited to showcase the impactful work of GGMC and its programs, made possible by the dedication of our members, partners, and sponsors. The report details key highlights, including the expanded work of the G2MC Family Health History (FHH) Group, the formation of the G2MC Clinical Forums—including the new Epilepsy Forum—and the successful PRECISE-IHCC Conference in Singapore. Explore the full report to learn more about our initiatives and how we are collectively shaping the future of genomic medicine.

GGMC Member Survey

Your Feedback Is Shaping the Future of GGMC

A survey was sent to all GGMC members in March. Early responses indicate that GGMC activities have positively impacted careers, fostered international collaborations, and improved patient diagnosis. Some members have provided suggestions that may be incorporated into GGMC’s future strategic plan to enhance membership benefits. If you haven’t yet, please contribute to shaping GGMC’s value proposition by completing the survey.

IHCC Cohort Atlas: Advancing Global Discovery and Access

The IHCC Cohort Atlas, now featuring 89 cohorts and millions of participants, is a vital online platform for searching harmonized metadata, paving the way for federated data discovery and analysis. Future development aims to transform the Atlas into a FAIR data management platform with enhanced discoverability, federated data access, and integrated analysis environments, enabling broader utilization of cohort data for impactful research.

G2MC Clinical Forum: Transforming the Future of Epilepsy Care Through Genomics

The G2MC Epilepsy Forum, established in late 2024, unites global experts to advance the use of genomic medicine in epilepsy care. Recent activities include developing a concept paper and a survey to assess current practices and identify opportunities for genomic integration. This collaborative initiative aims to foster research, improve diagnostics, and build capacity to ultimately benefit individuals living with epilepsy.

International genomic initiatives: Goals, challenges and collaborations

Grant Wood, GGMC CEO

International genomic organizations (IGOs) play a vital role in expanding access to genomic advancements globally. While IGOs promote collaboration, they encounter significant obstacles in funding, diverse regulations, and infrastructure development, especially in lower-resourced countries. There is an immediate requirement for a multi-stakeholder international genomics accelerator and greater financial emphasis on translating genomic research into clinical practice to benefit patients worldwide.
