GGMC Educational Webinar Series
Upcoming Webinar: December 19, 2024 | 9:00 am EST | 2:00 PM UK
Join Us Each Month
The GGMC Educational Webinar Series brings together leaders, educators, researchers, and professionals with all levels of expertise to share health sciences initiatives taking place in their respective fields and countries.
Each month’s webinar will feature new guest speakers offering novel insights into their fields. The virtual platform allows us to reach a global audience, particularly those in low-and middle income countries (LMICs) where our organization’s mission is heavily focused. This monthly series is free and open to anyone who wishes to participate.
Join us as we come together each month to share scientific ideas, best practices, challenges, lessons learned, funding opportunities, and more as we continue our mission of improving population health for all.
Upcoming Webinar
"Looking Back to Move Forward: Genetics, Transfusion Medicine, and Race."
December 19, 2024 | 9:00 am EST | 2:00 PM UK
Dr. Richard Haspel
Dr. Haspel is currently the Vice Chair for Medical Education in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Department of Pathology, a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, and a member of the Global Genomic Medicine Consortium (G2MC) Steering Committee. He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health to facilitate developing a genomics curriculum for medical students and pathology residents. “He is also a former Co-Chair of the Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genomics (ISCC-PEG). This National Human Genome Research Institute supported group aims to improve genomic literacy of healthcare providers and enhance the effective practice of clinical genomic medicine by facilitating interactions among the key stakeholders in genomics education.
About the Talk
The discovery of the Mendelian inheritance of the ABO antigens in 1910 was key in fostering modern genetics research. Less than a decade later, blood group antigen frequencies were first used to define racial groups. This approach, known as seroanthropology, was the basis for collecting large amounts of blood group frequency data in different populations and was also sometimes used for racist purposes. Ultimately, population geneticists used these data to disprove race as a biological construct. Through understanding the history of seroanthropology, and recognizing the harms of its lingering presence, healthcare providers can better practice race-conscious, as opposed to race-based, transfusion medicine.
