GGMC Educational Webinar Series
Upcoming Webinar: April 23, 2024, at 6:30 PM EST, / Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 8:30 AM Sydney, Australia time
Join Us Each Month
The GGMC Educational Webinar Series, established and previously hosted by the International Health Cohorts Consortium (IHCC), has been expanded to include both consortiums within the GGMC organization. The series brings together leaders, educators, researchers, and professionals with all levels of expertise to share health sciences initiatives taking place in their respective fields and countries.
Each month’s webinar will feature new guest speakers offering novel insights into their fields. The virtual platform allows us to reach a global audience, particularly those in low-and middle income countries (LMICs) where our organization’s mission is heavily focused. This monthly series is free and open to anyone who wishes to participate.
Join us as we come together each month to share scientific ideas, best practices, challenges, lessons learned, funding opportunities, and more as we continue our mission of improving population health for all.
Upcoming Webinar
"Enabling Workforce Capability in Genomic Medicine: Evidence-Informed Education and Implementation."
April 23, 2024, at 6:30 PM EST / Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 8:30 AM Sydney, Australia time
Amy Nisselle & Bronwyn Terrill
Amy Nisselle, PhD leads the Genomics Workforce stream of Melbourne Genomics and
previously led the Workforce & Education program for Australian Genomics. She applies research insights to develop education and training programs for the genomics workforce. Amy’s doctorate was in genetics education and she has worked in population screening and medical/genetics education across multiple sectors.
Bronwyn Terrill, MEd works in Workforce Education, Australian Genomics and Clinical Translation, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. She collaborates with researchers and
professional groups to develop and evaluate education programs for health professionals and
stakeholders in genomic medicine. Bronwyn has international experience in professional and
public education.
Both Bronwyn and Amy have worked in the UK, US and Australia. Together they founded and convene the Genomics Education Network of Australasia, chaired the Human Genetics Society of Australasia’s Education, Social Issues Committee, and are members of international
genomics education committee. They are based in Genomics & Society, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Australia.
About the Talk
The increasing utility and availability of genomic testing is impacting all medical disciplines and the implementation of genomic medicine into health care requires system-wide workforce development. Genetics and genomics education at foundational and advanced levels is required, ideally delivered through a mix of formal and informal programs, including workplace learning. When we mapped the Australian landscape of genomic practice, education and training, we found genomics education is primarily developed and delivered by clinicians and scientists without formal education qualifications or experience. Few programs were informed by the needs of target audiences, sufficiently funded or evaluated to determine effectiveness. As part of a national genomics implementation effort, we developed tools to support the design, delivery, evaluation and reporting of education programs that meet the needs of health professionals involved in delivery genomic medicine. The tools to support effective education have now been endorsed and adopted by organizations in Australia and internationally, with the toolkit actively disseminated through our international working group, collaborations and networks.
