Message from the Co-Chairs

Greetings, Global Leaders in Genomic Medicine!

We’re delighted to share this newsletter highlighting recent developments and upcoming opportunities of the International Health Cohorts Consortium (IHCC), a program of the Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative (GGMC). Together, we are building a world where genomic medicine benefits everyone, everywhere.

Taiwan Biobank: A Treasure Trove for Global Health Research

This quarter, we spotlight the Taiwan Biobank, a member of IHCC and a national biobank established in 2008. This rich resource contains genetic, phenotypic, and lifestyle data from over half a million participants. The Taiwan Biobank is a valuable tool for researchers investigating a wide range of health conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and infectious diseases.

We encourage IHCC members to explore collaboration opportunities with the Taiwan Biobank. More information about the biobank and its access procedures can be found on their website: https://www.biobank.org.tw/.

Fogarty International Center Funding Opportunities

The Fogarty International Center (FIC), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), offers a variety of funding opportunities to support international collaborative health research. These grants can be used to support a wide range of activities, including investigator exchanges, workshops, fellowships and collaborative research projects.

We recommend IHCC members visit the FIC website to learn more about their funding programs: https://www.fic.nih.gov/Funding.

Don’t Miss the PRECISE-IHCC 2024 Conference!

Mark your calendars for the upcoming PRECISE-IHCC 2024 Conference, taking place August 21-23 in Singapore. This premier conference will bring together researchers from around the world to share the latest findings in cohort research methodology and application to precision medicine. The conference will feature presentations on a variety of topics, including:

  • New approaches to cohort recruitment and retention
  • Harmonization of data collection methods across cohorts
  • Leveraging big data for cohort studies
  • Ethical considerations in cohort research

We look forward to seeing you at PRECISE-IHCC 2024! More information about the conference, including registration details, are available on the conference website:  https://www.preciseihcc-conference.sg/.

Taiwan Biobank (TWB)

Director: Dr. Hsiu-Ming Shih

The Taiwan Biobank is the oldest and arguably most comprehensive biobank in Taiwan. Established in 2012 at Academia Sinica, its goal is to accelerate scientific discovery by providing researchers access to resources for biomedical research. The TWB’s main resource is its population cohort, which is comprised of 200,000 participants recruited from different parts of Taiwan, with most participants being between the age of 30-70. We would like to thank Dr. Amy Nisselle & Dr. Bronwyn Terrill who were our speakers at the recent webinar titled “Enabling Workforce Capability in Genomic Medicine: Evidence-Informed Education and Implementation”. Please click the link below to view the webinar recording.

Upcoming Webinar

Our next webinar is on May 28, 2024 at 9:00 AM EDT/4:00 PM EAT featuring our guest speaker Dr. Mohamed Zahir Alimohamed. The webinar is titled, “Integrating Genetics into the Tanzanian Healthcare: An overview”.

Our aim for this online series is to provide a forum for IHCC and G2MC members to exchange scientific ideas, best practices, and lessons learned; showcase cohorts’ accomplishments, emphasizing LMICs; share international funding opportunities; and more. Each month a different IHCC or G2MC member will be featured as a guest speaker. Want to preview upcoming talks, register to participate, and even host your own?
