Functional Groups

G2MC Flagship Projects

  • Assist champion healthcare providers in determining local and country-wide family health history needs and capabilities.
  • Identify various methods for obtaining family health history data which best fit local needs and capabilities.
  • Adopt data standards for wide-scale data input and sharing.
  • Investigate available risk assessment algorithms to determine best clinical application.
  • Combine family health history with clinical, genomic, and environmental data to create new knowledge for patient care.

The Clinical Forums Flagship Project aims to enhance the diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment of genetic disorders through deep genetic insights, with the mission to spearhead innovative research and translate discoveries into practical medical advancements. This involves collaboration with G2MC members, pharmaceutical entities, and patient advocacy groups to foster the application of research findings into clinical settings.

Rare Genetic Disorders Forum

This project aims to enable LMICs around the world to implement genome and exome sequencing as a routine service to patients when clinically indicated, but more specifically supporting children with rare undiagnosed genetic disorders.

  • Based on results from the funded six-site pilot project, develop and implement the project to include more LMIC sites from around the world.
  • Evaluate clinical outcomes, provider and patient satisfaction, ethical, social and legal implications, and cost-effectiveness of the intervention.
  • Train local clinicians in genomic medicine in the genetic evaluation, result interpretation, and pre and post-test counseling.

Epilepsy Forum

Given the complexity of epilepsy, effective management strategies are crucial. These strategies must include a comprehensive understanding of the condition and personalized treatment plans. A key element of this approach is strong collaboration among healthcare professionals. The objectives of this group are:

  • To assess current practices by evaluating how genetic testing and insights are currently utilized in epilepsy management.
  • To identify gaps by exploring areas where integration of genetic information is lacking in clinical practice.
  • To evaluate multi-disciplinary collaboration by understanding how different specialists contribute to the management of genetic epilepsy.
  • To support members in implementing genomic epilepsy clinics in their countries.

GGMC Working Groups and Committees

G2MC’s parent organization, the Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative (GGMC), has the following functional groups that operate across all of GGMC’s programs.

  • Develop an approach and set the standard for what a G2MC Flagship Project is through the development of common templates, guidelines, an application and review process for relevance to G2MC, and a monitoring plan to ensure outcomes and distribution of results to the genomic medicine community.
  • Oversee the implementation projects (Flagship Projects) – solicit applications, select projects, monitor projects
  • Set and evaluate progress on objectives
  • Design the Resource Center infrastructure
  • Determine how Genomic Medicine tools/resources are identified,
screened, and shared in the G2MC Resource Center
  • Populate the Resource Center
  • Set and evaluate progress on objectives
  • Plan and produce all-member convenings, including in-person and virtual conferences
  • Set and evaluate progress on objectives

Training the next generation of genomic medicine professionals through the development of a mentorship program, educational webinars, and other programs and activities generating leadership skills in the field of genomic medicine.

Analyzing, advocating for, and sharing global policies that support the implementation of genomic medicine.

Fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for genomic medicine professionals from diverse backgrounds and demographics to excel, become leaders within the GGMC organization and its consortia, and be represented across all projects and working groups.

Involvement in functional groups varies, however, members can typically expect to:

  • Participate in a monthly conference call
  • Assist with tasks such as (but not limited to) developing and reviewing resources to build the Resource Center, participating in flagship project proposals, writing and/or reviewing manuscripts, sharing expertise, discussing cases and projects, mentoring Early Career Investigators (ECIs), and more.
  • Members may be encouraged/nominated to become future leaders for those groups if they show leadership, integrity, engagement, and excitement to be part of G2MC and its mission.
  • Members may be asked to participate in site testing of materials or in flagship projects leading to publication, funding, collaborations and more.
  • Represent G2MC at international conferences.
